The New Blogger Beauty Obsession

Self-proclaimed “beauty product junkie” and blogger Camille Styles readily admits that she’s tried every beauty product under the sun … except for airbrush. “I’d occasionally hear friends mention they’d had it done for a special occasion, but assumed the at-home versions were hard to use or too clunky to fit in a drawer,” she shared on

She invited her photographer friend Kristen to come over and help her figure out the Luminess Legend. “Surprise: there was really nothing to figure out. You plug in the palm-sized device, put a few drops of foundation into the stylus, press an ‘on’ button then gently pull back on the throttle while a fine, barely perceptible mist kisses your face.”

“The mist was so subtle that I almost thought nothing was happening, but when I opened my eyes, surprise again! My skin looked flawless. I’d worried that I needed to cover up my hair and clothes so the foundation didn’t spray onto them, but somehow, magically, there wasn’t a trace.”

Camille especially loves the primer, which she uses just about every day, and how hygienic the system is. Because you apply your makeup using air and a stylus, you don’t have to worry about bacteria and infections from dirty hands or brushes. “I actually use it daily — I can apply it faster than ‘normal’ foundation, plus I do think that not using a sponge or my fingers to apply has helped keep away the occasional acne I used to get. You can apply a really light spray so that the effect is super natural, or do a few layers to make it a more full coverage ‘special occasion’ look.”

“Final verdict? I’m obsessed. Not only because of the naturally flawless finish the Airbrush provides, but also because of how quickly I can apply foundation now — literally, 30 seconds flat.”

5 Easy Ways to Stay Flawless All Summer

Summer is arguably the most fun time of the year. (We were going to say magical, but obviously that’s reserved for the sequined, snowflake-bedecked, gift-giving days of winter.) It’s filled with picnics, fireworks, pool parties and, best of all, vacations.

What do you do, though, to keep your makeup looking flawless, no matter where you are in the world, without carting around your entire vanity?

Luminess Air’s airbrush makeup line is surprisingly easy to pack up and go. The Legend systems are the smallest airbrush systems in the world, and, thanks to the automatic perfection that comes with airbrush, you don’t need too many products. Read on for these incredibly easy ways to take perfection with you, everywhere you go.

  1. Pack it up and go. The Legend fits perfectly in our travel case, with plenty of room for your foundation, sunsreen + primer, bronzer and sealant.
  2. Power it anywhere. Even though every system comes with an American power adapter, we’ve also got you covered abroad. We have European and British travel adapters as well, and, if you’re going somewhere more tropical, a portable battery pack. Just pop in some batteries, plug it up, and you’re set to airbrush, even if there’s no outlet in sight!
  3. Take fewer products. Our new Mystic foundation packs a full coverage punch because it’s formulated with primer, corrector and concealer. You only need one product to do the job of four, saving room in your carry-on, and time getting ready so you can hit the beach quicker.
  4. Protect your skin. Like Mystic, our sunscreen has, as the name suggests, primer built in. What’s better is that this broad spectrum SPF 30 was specially formulated to be worn beneath airbrush foundation so it won’t look cakey or feel tacky. Bonus: it doesn’t have that all-too-familiar sunscreen smell.
  5. Protect your look. No matter what you’re doing on vacation—swimming, hiking, skiing—you can protect your makeup look from water and sweat with Final Seal. This waterproof airbrush sealant locks in your look to keep you flawless all day.

No matter what, vacation should be fun. Use these tips to simplify your beauty routine so you can focus on enjoying yourself this summer.

What are your vacation plans?

The Busy Woman’s Beauty Hack

Getting ready in the morning can be a bit of a production.

You have to squeeze in your workout, showering, waking up your children, making breakfast, waking up your children again because they fell back asleep, getting them ready for school/daycare/camp, getting you ready for work, all in the span of a couple of hours. No modern woman has time for a lengthy makeup routine.

The one secret weapon that savvy, busy women have in their makeup arsenal is mystic.

No, really. Mystic.

Mystic is the newest foundation from Luminess, and combines four makeup steps into one simple product. With the foundation, concealer, corrector and primer in one, you can achieve a complexion-perfecting finish with opaque coverage that looks and feels as natural as a second skin.

The problem with most full-coverage foundations is that they cake, clump and feel like a clay mask. With Mystic, Luminess Air has conquered the cover-up dilemma by providing long-lasting, exceptional coverage in an ultra-lightweight formula.

This premium, all-in-one airbrush foundation was developed for the woman who wants complete coverage with the look of natural bare skin. With just a few drops, Mystic easily conceals hard-to-cover concerns including redness, scars, birthmarks, tattoos, vitiligo, blemishes, rosacea, discolorations and dark under-eye circles.

Delivered through a light, airbrush mist, Mystic provides a dewy, luminous finish that evens and enhances while still allowing your skin to breathe. With just one light layer, wrinkles instantly soften and visible imperfections disappear, leaving you with perfectly smooth, glowing skin.

Mineral-based and hypoallergenic, Mystic’s gentle formula is light enough for everyday use and opaque enough to blur any imperfection. Available in a range of skin-matching shades, Mystic is transfer and smudge-resistant for a flawless bare skin look that lasts all day.

Metallic Magic

When it comes to summer beauty, it’s all about glow. Whether you prefer light or maximum coverage, you always want the light to hit your skin in the perfect way.

While you can perfectly highlight your face every day with Glow, sometimes, it’s fun to have a little extra sparkle with Metallics. Janey Jessen ( created the perfect dewy look for a night out with our Gold Metallic highlighter and gold eye shadow.

“I’m in love with the gold highlighter,” Janey shared. “It’s gorgeous! After using these products for a few months I have to say I’m completely hooked. I love the finish and how light it feels. I don’t really feel like I have makeup on most days.”

Janey prepped her look with our Porcelain primer, X-Out for her blemishes, and Eraser to even out her skin tone. She combined her foundation and concealer for complete perfection, before applying her blush, bronzer and eye shadow. When applying her gold highlighter, she made sure to hit all of the areas of her face that catch the light—nose, cheekbones, chin and forehead—and added subtle shimmer to her lipstick.

“In this tutorial I mostly focused on how to bring radiance through the foundation to give a natural glow, strategically placed strobing, and a pretty shimmery eyeshadow look. I’ve been digging rose gold lately so I used that palette as inspiration. This is definitely a look that can be worn for weddings, date nights, or a night out with the girls. You can also mattify it and wear it anytime! My favorite part of this whole look was using the gold highlighter on my bright pink lipstick. It definitely made the whole look pop and gave it a bit of attitude.”

You can mix in our Metallics with your foundation for a soft shimmer and overall glow. You can also use them to contour and highlight, as a fabulous eye shadow, or to make your lips look extra special like Janey.

•  If you have a darker skin tone, mix in Bronzer for a subtle shimmer.

•  Add a little moisturizer/primer over your foundation if you were too heavy-

•  Do your eyes first, then concealer, then foundation. This will allow you to

•  Don’t touch your face. Touching your face with dirty hands or makeup
brushes will transfer bacteria and can cause breakouts or infections. That’s
why airbrush is so hygienic.

•  Don’t pull all the way back on the trigger when applying makeup. Pull
slightly to apply in light layers.

•  Don’t hold it too close to your face. Hold your stylus 6″-8″ away from your
face to avoid a tacky look and feel.

•  Don’t use too many drops of blush. Our blush is very highly pigmented,   so it
doesn’t take much to make a big impact. Put a little on, and let it dry
before deciding to add more.

•  Don’t panic! Everything is easily fixable. If you overspray, just dab it out gently with your fingertips. If you get too heavy-handed with anything, balance it out with another product. You never have to start over!

How to Master Kerry Washington’s Met Gala Vixen Look

Monday night gave us the year’s best, most-anticipated and exclusive fashion event: the Met Gala.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit is an annual black-tie soiree held the first Monday of every May. While it does exist to raise money for the Costume Institute, the fashion world knows it more as the party of the year. The gala is ripe with A-List celebrities from the fashion, business, political and film worlds, dressed beyond the nines to the year’s theme.

This year, the theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” which many interpreted as an excuse for futuristic dress worthy of Star Trek. (Just look at Taylor Swift, this year’s co-host, who could have served as the night’s disco ball.)

We love far-out looks as much as the next fashionista, but we also love it when celebrities give us looks we can use every day. That’s why, out of the hundreds of Best-Dressed celebrities who attended, we want to emulate Kerry Washington. The star took the theme for a darker turn, but we’re loving every bit of it—from the arm sleeves to the vibrant maroon hues. She gave us all the #BeautyGoals we need today.

Love her look, too? Here’s how to get it:

  1. Start with a light layer of foundation. The focus is on your eyes, so you don’t want to detract from them with a heavy look. Try 3 or 4 layers of Silk to get the no makeup makeup look.
  2. Apply a light contour. Using 2 drops of the next darker shade from your everyday foundation, lightly outline your jaw (skipping the chin). Move up to the cheeks and spray the hollows in a downward motion from your temples to your lips. (If you have trouble finding the hollows, suck in your cheeks like you’re making a fishy face. The hollows are the bits that suck in.) Now, outline your forehead along the hairline from one eyebrow to the other.
  3. Just above the hollows, but not quite on the apples of your cheeks, lightly spray blush (1-2 drops) in a downward motion. Remember that our blush is highly pigmented, so it doesn’t take much to get the look you want.
  4. For your eyes, start with a base layer of our Smoke eye shadow (ES-20). With 2 drops in your stylus, spray a light layer over your eyelids (from the lash line to just above the crease). Alternate your eyes as you spray on the layers (spray a light layer on your right eyelid, spray a light layer on your left eyelid, repeat) so that each layer can dry between applications. Next, put 2 drops of Black (ES-03) in your stylus. Starting at the outer corner of your lid, spray about halfway along the lash line. Using the same movement along the crease, you’re going to create a “V,” blending it out on the rest of your lid.
  5. Grab your highlighter (2 drops), and spray right beneath and above your eyebrow, on the highest parts of your cheekbones (right under the eyes), and in a straight line from between your brows to your chin.
  6. Finish with a translucent setting powder, your favorite lipgloss and some optional glitter, and you’re ready for the Met!

How to Conceal Blemishes

You’ve worked weeks to prepare for this day.

You’ve found the perfect dress, shoes and jewelry for prom.

You’ve perfected your presentation down to the second.

You’ve spent years working toward that degree.

All of your family and friends are in town for your wedding.

And then, you get a not-so-welcome visitor. A huge, monstrous, vibrant pimple in the middle of your face that seems to radiate “Look at me!” vibes.

Whatever the day is, momentous or ordinary, a breakout can ruin it. You can try to cover it with your traditional foundations and concealers, but you’ll need to touch it up. Or cake on so much makeup that you can literally scrape it off with your fingernail.

The problem with those methods are obvious: Who wants to have to worry about touch-ups all day? And, caked-on makeup doesn’t allow your skin to breathe, making your breakout that much worse.

With airbrush makeup, you can perfectly conceal your breakout while still allowing it to breathe and heal. Erase your breakout with these easy steps:

  1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Start with moisturizer/primer. Place 4-6 drops in your stylus, turn the compressor on and barely pull back on the trigger. Holding your stylus 6-8 inches away from your face, apply the product in light layers, starting at the forehead and moving in gentle circles around the face.
  3. Next, place 2-3 drops of our Eraser into your stylus. The Eraser effectively covers the redness of the blemish, making it seem like it’s disappeared. Bring the stylus in close to focus on the pimple and, again, apply in light layers. Allowing each layer to dry between applications, continue to apply layers until redness is gone.
  4. If you feel you need additional coverage to help minimize the pimple’s appearance or texture, apply an airbrush concealer in the same manner as your Eraser, until you’re satisfied.
  5. Finish with your foundation. Start with 6 drops in your stylus, and gently apply in light layers as you did with your moisturizer/primer.

Voilà! Your pimple is gone and your face is flawless!

Flawless Acne Coverage: Before and After

We often talk about the benefits of airbrushing your makeup, especially when you have acne, breakouts or other problem areas. We can tell you a million times about how it allows your skin to breathe and heal, how it helps prevent breakouts, or how easily you can get lightweight and flawless coverage.

Ashley is a college student who doesn’t have time to deal with pimples in the morning. Even with her worst breakouts, Ashley can easily conceal them for a fresh, flawless finish in less than five minutes.

Teri from Beautiful Makeup Search ( tested out the coverage on her assistant, Caylie. They captured the process in three shots: Before, After Foundation, After Full Makeup.

Above, Caylie is shown with a freshly cleaned face and a little moisturizer/primer.

After only applying foundation, Caylie’s skin looks flawless! What breakout?

Teri finished off Caylie’s look with our blush and glow, and a little mascara. Caylie’s ready for the day!

“Luminess Air was easier to use than I thought. It worked wonders to cover my acne and scars, and looks really natural and light on my skin,” Caylie said.

What about you? What transformations have you seen with Luminess?

Simple Ways to Prevent Acne

We’ve talked about how to heal your acne, but now, let us take you through how to prevent it in the first place. Though there are several things you can, and should, do regularly to prevent acne and breakouts, they all boil down to three basic principles: hygiene, health and products. Throughout your skincare routine, be sure to check the labels. You always want products that are hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and water-based (not oil) when possible. Avoid fragrances and irritants such as citric extracts, menthol and denatured alcohol.

Keep it Clean

  • Wash your face. Dermatologists suggest washing your face in the morning and before bed. While you’ve likely always heard to wash your face with hot water to open your pores, exposing your skin to extremes can cause irritation, excess dryness and blood vessel ruptures. Always wash and rinse your face with lukewarm water. If your skin runs dry, take care to select a cleanser and products that have moisturizer. Contrastingly, if you have oily skin, be sure to avoid overly moisturizing products.
  • Wash your hands. It’s important to avoid touching your face as much as possible, but when you have to do it—such as when washing your face or applying sunscreen or moisturizer—wash your hands first. Dirty hands can transfer bacteria, causing breakouts, irritation and possibly infection.
  • Moisturize. Ensuring your skin is properly hydrated is as important as making sure it’s not oily. Apply moisturizer after every face wash to avoid dryness and irritation. If you have oily skin, choose a gel-based moisturizer, which will provide hydration without overdoing it. If you have dry skin, use a cream-based moisturizer that will, by nature, be heavier and longer-lasting.
  • Exfoliate. You may have read blogs from women who talk about exfoliating as part of their daily ritual (we’ve seen our fair share), but over-exfoliating can irritate your skin, cause excess dryness and make your breakouts worse. You should exfoliate, at most, once a week, to remove dead skin and unclog pores.
  • Take it off. Removing your makeup at the end of the day is one of the most important steps of your skincare regimen. Sleeping in your makeup can clog your pores and worsen your breakouts. Even sleeping in mascara can cause little infections in your eye area. It’s important to wash your face after removing your makeup to remove all traces of makeup.
  • No touchy. As we said earlier, touching your face—with your hands, brushes, sponges or anything that could potentially harbor dirt or bacteria—can cause breakouts and infection. This especially means no popping your pimples, as the dirt from your fingers can get in the open sore and worsen the blemish.
  • Sleep clean. While you sleep, oils transfer from your face to your pillowcase, causing dirt, grime and dead skin to spread night after night and cause acne. Try washing your pillowcases once a week. If that’s not enough, wash it more frequently and switch the side of the pillow you use every night. If you don’t have time to wash it frequently, keep several pillowcases you can alternate.

Diet and Exercise

  • Protect your skin. You know you need to wear some kind of sunscreen daily. Do you do it? Probably not. But did you know wearing daily SPF not only helps protect against skin cancer, but can also prevent acne? Overexposure to the sun can exacerbate acne, redness and irritation.
  • Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Staying adequately hydrated throughout the day helps your body function better, increases your metabolism and clears up you skin. When you don’t get enough water, your body can build up toxins and excrete them through your skin. Drinking at least eight cups of water each day will help your body flush the toxins the way they’re supposed to. Think of it as a daily detox.
  • Eat healthy. Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, zinc, vitamins and minerals helps prevent acne by keeping your skin healthy and functioning properly.
  • Avoid potential irritants. While modern scientists put much less stock in the idea that chocolate causes acne than scientists of the last century, certain foods can worsen your acne or cause breakouts. Every person is different, though. Try cutting out different potential risk foods—dairy, sugar, legumes, high-glycemic foods and wheat—from your diet to see what does and doesn’t work for your skin. Cut out each food (one at a time) for two weeks for the best analysis.
  • Get the patch. You know smoking and drinking are bad for your health, but they’re also bad for your complexion because the toxins in tobacco and alcohol can act as skin irritants or contribute to the unhealthy toxic excretion that happens when you’re not your healthiest you.
  • Lace up. Stress is a huge contributing factor to your acne. Putting on your sneakers and getting outside, up and moving can relieve stress and help acne. Even better, regular exercise will help your heart, overall health and mortality.
  • Catch your zzz’s. Just like exercise, proper sleep can help your body function better and reduce stress which, in turn, helps prevent acne. Each hour of sleep lost beyond your normal allotment can increase your stress level by up to 15%. Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night (9-10 if you’re younger than 18).

Finding the Right Products

  • Benzoyl Peroxide is a common ingredient in acne medication because it kills the bacteria that causes acne. Look for products with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide concentration; less won’t be as effective, and more can irritate the skin. It also removes dead skin to reveal brighter, rejuvenated skin.
  • Salicylic Acid also helps kill acne-causing bacteria. It causes the skin to shed more rapidly and promotes the growth of new skin. Apply small amounts to affected areas after you wash your face at night.
  • Tea Tree Oil is a natural home remedy that acts as an anti-inflammatory, making pimples less noticeable in size and redness. The oil is often concentrated, so be sure to dilute it with water before applying to affected areas with a cotton swab.
  • Airbrush Makeup is one of the best and simplest ways to prevent acne. Using airbrush makeup on a daily basis keeps your skin hygienic (no dirty hands or brushes touch your face), moisturizes your face (it’s water-based and so hydrates your skin), covers current blemishes without being heavy and improves skin texture. Check out these other benefits to airbrushing.

Airbrush for Everyday

Lifestyle Blogger Janey Jessen ( first tried out Luminess Air airbrush makeup a few months ago, and has fallen more and more in love with each application. She’s found that airbrushing her makeup in the mornings allows her to get a flawless finish in a fraction of the time as traditional makeup.

“These boys keep me so busy on the daily. Especially in the morning, some days my get ready window can be 5 minutes long and other days 30 minutes. I just never know what I’m gonna get, so spending as little time on my makeup as possible is key,” Janey shared.

Luminess is so easy to use and it goes on so fast, it has cut my makeup routine in half. I use Luminess Air all the time now, I’ve been loving how dewy and natural it makes my skin look, especially on those days I want to have a light makeup day. It takes little to no effort to achieve a smooth porcelain finish. I know airbrush makeup sounds a little intimidating and daunting, but all you have to do is try it once and it’s an automatic love connection.”
